Understanding Natural Mosquito Repellents – Citronella & Eucalyptus Oil

In early 19th century, it was discovered that the fragrance of essential oils which humans find pleasing, is a pungent odour for mosquitoes, which in turn repels them.

Eureka!

And that’s when the usage of essential oils as mosquito and other insect repellent dates back in history. And two such essential oils were citronella oil and eucalyptus. Citronella mosquito repellents are becoming extremely popular these days.

Citronella is an essential oil that is obtained from leaves and stem of one of the plants of the lemongrass specie. When the leaves and stems of this plant are crushed, they release citronella oil which is used as a natural insect repellent. Citronella oil for mosquitoes is used in various forms – directly applying the oil, in the form of infusers etc.

The colour of citronella oil is yellowish brown and the smell is a mix of grass and trees.

Eucalyptus oil on other hand is extracted from the leaves of a full grown eucalyptus tree. There are different varieties of eucalyptus but most of them work very well in repelling mosquitoes. Like the above eucalyptus oil for mosquitoes also come in various forms – oil, infusers even leaves at time.

Eucalyptus oil is golden brown in colour and has a strong pungent smell.

How do citronella oil and eucalyptus oil work as a mosquito repellent?

Both citronella oil and eucalyptus oil are strong mosquito repellents but they work best when they are both mixed in a perfect proportion – after years of research Goodknight has achieved this right proportion and launched two citronella and eucalyptus oil based outdoor mosquito repellents – Goodknight Fabric Roll-On and Goodknight Patches.

You might think, if citronella oil, which is extracted from lemongrass repels mosquitoes, there would be no mosquitoes near and around the lemongrass plants. You could say the same about eucalyptus trees.

Wrong. Only the active ingredient (that is extracted in the form of oil) repels mosquitoes and not the whole plant/tree. So even if you have a whole bush of lemongrass growing in your backyard, mosquitoes may hover around the plant.

These oils does not kill mosquitoes but repel them. The mosquito repelling properties of these plants ensures that the mosquitoes are irritated with the smell of the oil and do not come near us. So when these essential oils are applied on the skin or clothes, we become unbearable to mosquitoes and they don’t bite us.

How to use citronella oil and eucalyptus oil as mosquito repellent?

You can choose to buy citronella oil and eucalyptus oil from the market and either use them individually or as a concoction by applying it on your clothes to repel mosquitoes, but the problem with this is that these oil evaporates really fast and you may get bitten by mosquitoes just minutes after applying it. Also getting the right proportion of oil and the right dosage of application is extremely difficult and then you also have to deal with the pungent smell of these oils.

Hence Goodknight, India’s most trusted mosquito repellent brand has launched the perfect citronella and eucalyptus oil based repellents: Goodknight Fabric Roll-On and Goodknight Patches. Both of them have a perfect combination of citronella and eucalyptus oil and they provide up to 8 hours of protection from mosquitoes. It can last for 8 hours because of the high quality excipients used. If you are wondering about the dosage – it is mentioned on the pack.

Just apply 4 dots of Goodknight Fabric Roll-On on your clothes or 2 patches for complete protection from disease causing mosquitoes for up to 8 hours outdoors.

And don’t worry about the smell – there are two variants of Goodknight Fabric Roll-On available – Citrus and Bubble gum to appeal to your preference of smell.

You must also remember that mosquitoes that cause Dengue and Chikungunya mostly bite during the day, when you are outdoors. So keep your family and yourself protected at all times by using them every day, before stepping out.
